If you can afford to buy an Xbox with multiple games but can't afford $50 for a whole year of Xbox live, there's problems to be worked on.

My solution to lack of BB connection: USE YOUR FRIENDS!
Now I think everyone out there has a friend with broadband, so get XBL, suck up a little to them, then go to their house and, boom, you're connected. I might have to use this trick until my cheap ass parents get DSL...

See, so unless you live on a desert island there is no excuse not to get XBL.

Wait, guys. For those who don't have broadband, Xbox Live will cost nearly $300 a year. That's $20 extra per month for broadband ($240/year), plus the $50 Live fee. For most people (because most have 56K), that's the total cost they're looking at: $290 per year. Things are tight for some people (e.g., me), and that kind of expenditure for online gaming is too much.

Nono ... don't get any wireless routers. Unless your expecting to pay 500+ for one ... anything less won't be able to go more than 10 feet away. I tried a 200 dollar one ... can't even have it in another room. Took the pos back.

But it's not like Xbox Live is the ONLY thing you can do with broadband. Everyone is going to need broadband sooner or later, Xbox or not, so you can't really include it in the cost of Xbox Live.

300 bucks a year? dude, xbox live is 10 bucks a month, so thats 120 bucks a year. thats like how much i get in 1 paycheck. and broadband is probly gonna cost someone like 40-50 bucks. so thats only 170 bucks a year, at the most. how the hell did u get 300 bucks?

    Lol ...

    Broadband:

    $20 (Cheap broadband ...) x 12 months = $240

    XBL:

    $10 x 12 months = $120

    $240 + $120 = $360 ....

    Now you see there snoop?

Yes, you can include it in the cost of Xbox Live, because that's how a lot of 56K'rs are looking at the cost (myself included). Going to Xbox Live means I have to upgrade to broadband. I haven't upgraded yet, because although (as you say) there are other benefits to broadband, they aren't substantial enough to justify the expense. Xbox Live would be the only reason I would get broadband, and that goes, I imagine, for a lot of Xbox gamers with 56K modems. So, when they're thinking of getting Xbox Live, they're thinking not only about the $50 yearly fee, but about the cost of upgrading to broadband. They have to. That's part of the equation, part of the decision. People can't ignore that and then say, "But it's so cheap, there's no reason not to!" That's ignoring the broadband upgrade cost (minimum $20/month, or $240/year).

You didn't multiply the broadband cost by 12 (months), and you're figuring it too high anyway. For people with 56K, broadband will cost an extra $20 a month: instead of $20/month for 56K, they'll be paying $40 a month for broadband -- and that's a bare minimum. $20 x 12 months is $240. Plus the $50 XBL fee, and that's $290. See?
