All you have to do in Windows XP is this (I just did this myself but with 2 nics):

-Set up internet connection sharing (ICS) between the USB connection and the NIC.

Go to view your Network Places, and you should be able to do it from there. If you can't figure it out, try using the windows help with "internet connection sharing" and you should be able to set it up with step-by-step instructions from there.

alrighty, was hoping someone else was gonna type it all out

    1. Go to Control Panel -> Network Connections

    2. You should see something there thats your connection to the net. In your case, the USB modem or connection or whatever it is. Right-click on its icon and go to Properties.

    3. Click on the Advanced tab on the top of the window that just popped up.

    4. Check the button "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection"

You should then get a wizard or something that tells you how to do the rest. If not, at the bottom of the last popup window is a link to a wizard that will tell you what to do.

Yes, your sig DOES look like mine.

Anyway, a crossover cable won't work. The only way you're going to eliminate that wire is to get a wireless network setup. You'll need a wireless router and some access points.

Actually it's not that most here couldn't answer the questions. It's just that most of us are seriously getting tired of answering the same sort of questions over and over and over and over and over and over and over.....well you get the idea

I'm with carlbme on this...that's why the forums give you a search feature. Go buy a 50 ft. long Cat 5 cable...and then connect...crossovers are not needed....if worse comes to worse, call 1-800-4MY-XBOX, maybe they give a chit.
