Shocked FBI want to tap into your xbox live connection!!1one

    source

CNet are reporting that the FBI have sumbitted an 85 page document asking the FCC to require all broadband Internet providers, including cable modem and DSL companies, to rewire their networks to support easy wiretapping by police. Everything from instant messaging and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) programs to Microsoft's Xbox Live game service would be affected...

    Here's the skinny
A far-reaching proposal from the FBI, made public Friday, would require all broadband Internet providers, including cable modem and DSL companies, to rewire their networks to support easy wiretapping by police.

The FBI's request to the Federal Communications Commission aims to give police ready access to any form of Internet-based communications. If approved as drafted, the proposal could dramatically expand the scope of the agency's wiretap powers, raise costs for cable broadband companies and complicate Internet product development.

Legal experts said the 85-page filing includes language that could be interpreted as forcing companies to build back doors into everything from instant messaging and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) programs to Microsoft's Xbox Live game service. The introduction of new services that did not support a back door for police would be outlawed, and companies would be given 15 months to make sure that existing services comply.

"The importance and the urgency of this task cannot be overstated," says the proposal, which is also backed by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration. "The ability of federal, state and local law enforcement to carry out critical electronic surveillance is being compromised today."

Because the eavesdropping scheme has the support of the Bush administration, the FCC is expected to take it very seriously. Last month, FCC Chairman Michael Powell stressed that "law enforcement access to IP-enabled communications is essential" and that police must have "access to communications infrastructure they need to protect our nation."

The request from federal police comes almost a year after representatives from the FBI's Electronic Surveillance Technology Section approached the FCC and asked that broadband providers be required to provide more efficient, standardized surveillance facilities. Such new rules were necessary, the FBI argued, because terrorists could otherwise frustrate legitimate wiretaps by placing phone calls over the Internet.

So I guess we should just give them the keys to our houses too? It'll be easier than getting a warrant. That's for sure.

All these damn agencies want power over absolutely everything and it sickens me.

It's only a proposal so don't get too worried about this quite yet. It will most likely be shot down because companies will not have the resources (or legal authority) to carry out the process of RE-WIRING networks.

Like they're not spying on us already. It happens now and I'm sure it'll keep happening. I don't worry about it because I do nothing wrong. But yes, it does suck.

Of course this is only a proposal, I don't think the FCC will approve it, but they might you never know!

I agree in some sorts, but it still makes me feel a little edgy. I mean I'm not hiding anything, but it does feel like privacy is starting to go out the window.

They should start putting video streams in our houses now. It seems like that's what they would want. Privacy? Who cares!

Who gives a crap if they do this. Let them.

I'm not doing anything wrong, so I have nothing to worry about.

Only the people who are doing something wrong are the ones complaining.

That an erroneous position, because the definition of "wrong" changes depending on who is in power. But anyway, why should we have to pay more money to allow the government to spy on us?

Personally, I don't like the government in my business...despite the fact I know I'm not doing anything wrong.

This really gets me going because, right now, the State of Washington is looking at an initiative that will ban smoking in all restaurants and bars and "all indoor facilities" in the state. I don't even smoke and this really is irritating...

Why? Because, let's say I owned a bar...and let's say I owned the building...pay all my property taxes and own the real estate. Who the hell is the government to tell me that I can't allow smoking in my building? It's ridiculous...and this internet subject just gets my blood boiling on top of it.

Maximus here in Delaware we currently hold the record for the most strict smoking law in the USA. No smoking in doors at all, bowling allys, pool halls, bars, resturants, casinos, indoor auditoriums, indoor day care centers, hotels, etc... People can't even smoke outside on a resturant patio unless there is no roof on the patio. Lots of places have lost business, and some have gained business. Honestly I don't care I don't smoke and it is kinda nice walking into a resturant without clouds of smoke everywhere. But now they are looking into banning smoking in one's own car.......
