Post Nintendo working on new console

    Source CNN

TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- Nintendo Co., which dominates the portable video-game machine market, said Wednesday it is developing a new home game console code-named "Revolution" in an apparent attempt to catch up with rival Sony.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata refused to give details, saying he feared competitors will steal the plan, but said a prototype, which will be shown next year, will deliver "new ideas" for entertainment and won't be merely a more powerful version of its current Game Cube machine.

Iwata reiterated his view that Nintendo should not follow the strategy of Sony, which is working on a more powerful chip to drive its next-generation home game machine.

He said the gaming industry is reaching a dead end as its past formula for success -- dazzling consumers with more sophisticated imagery -- no longer works. Game sales have been declining for years in Japan, and growth has been slowing even in the more solid U.S. market, he said.

"What we need is not a next-generation machine but a next-generation way of playing games," Iwata told reporters at a Tokyo hotel. "We need to propose a new idea so that the game industry can overcome its current crisis."

Global sales of the Nintendo Game Cube at 15 million lag Sony's PlayStation 2, which dominates the home console market with more than 71 million sold worldwide. U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp. had sold nearly 14 million of its Xbox worldwide as of the end of last year.

Nintendo, the Kyoto-based manufacturer behind the Super Mario and Pokemon games, is also facing competition from Sony in handheld game machines, a market it dominates with its Game Boy Advance.

Sony says it will start selling a portable version of its PlayStation machine later this year in Japan and overseas at a later date.

To counter that threat, Nintendo is planning a new portable game machine for later this year in the United States and Japan. The Nintendo DS, which stands for "dual screen," adds a new twist to its handheld GameBoy Advance by having two color liquid-crystal displays.

That allows players to see a close-up on one monitor and an overall map on the other in some games, or use one as a touch-panel to turn or move figures in other games, as well as relay scribbled messages to another player through a wireless connection.

"Double screens and touch panels are not new technologies," Iwata said. "The idea of using them for a game machine is new."

Takashi Oka, an analyst at UFJ Tsubasa Securities Co. in Tokyo, said Nintendo will likely hold up against the threat from Sony's offerings because of its ability to come up with good game software. Sony's PlayStation Portable, nicknamed PSP, will also probably be mostly used to watch video instead of playing games, he said.

"Nintendo's power in creating game software is still going strong," Oka said. "I don't consider the PSP as a game machine so its arrival won't affect Nintendo."
Sorry if this is old news, or in the wrong area. I could not find an appropriate forum to post it in. Figred GD would be OK.

The PSP will be more geared towards watching movies? What the hell is that fool smoking? Guy-butt?

Unfortunately I think Nintendo's ship has sailed. It is time for them to give up. The days of NES and SNES were the glory days, but it is over.

I cannot ever see Nintendo being a serious threato the PS2 or Xbox.

You know they're grabbing at straws when they put down an obviously superior system. I mean seriously, look at the DS specs and then the PSP specs. Unless the DS somehow gets like 3x the CPU speed and 20x the 3D graphics processing power before launch, the DS has nothing on the PSP.

You can say that again, Nintendo is really lagging behind in the tech area. Just the fact that their systems allways change game mediums just sucks. Why dont they switch to DVD's? Oh...they want smaller disks....Seems kinda little kidish to me.

Well yeah, that's because the two popular systems in Japan are lacking in the dazzling and sophisticated imagery to get people to buy. They would probably be a lot happier if they checked out what the Xbox can do, and even that is lagging behind again but at least is leaps ahead of the PS2 and from what the games have shown us, ahead of what the GC is capable of.

That article doesn't say the they are denying the rumors of them joining with with Xbox did they? I guess there would still be a chance of that happening?

That won't happen, stop hoping for it :P

I think Nintendo is going in the right direction, with the Revolution and DS. We dont need more graphics in a game to make it better, look what we got with HL2, RE4, GT4, etc etc comming out.

It used to be what game looked the best sold, now with some few exceptions, they all are very good. I soley choose games for playability/online etc, rather than graphics now.

Nintendo is right though, a new change is needed, not just a more powerfull system, cause even what we got now, devs are only starting to peak them out (see Doom3/HL2 XB, GT4 PS2, RE4 GC) and its near the end of the console life cyles.

Like Peter Molenyeux(sp?) said in an interview, the next BIG change to come to games will be something TOTALLY different, like a new controller, sintead of a 2d interface controlling a 3d world.

DS isnt trying to compete graphicly with PSP (though metroid does look nice), its trying to do something NEW and different, and I for one will welcome it, rather tha just getting a "more powerfull GBA".

    IMO ofcourse:P

Personally, when it's possible to make games just as good on a hugely graphically superior system, I'd rather take that. Maybe they are going another route, but personally, I think two screens is a stupid idea. Nintendo can come up with some fresh concepts yes, but they no longer have the ability to make them awesome.

The only reason they're saying all this, is not because it's what they believe, it's because they know they can't make anything better, and they're trying to trick people into believing the garbage.

Nintendo's glory days are over. Every time I hear "Nintendo" I think of a rodent scavenging trash. I still have an SNES and everytime I look at it, I think "What happened?".

This is all my opinion as well.

PS. If you think Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 are even CLOSE to the pinnacle of 3D, they aren't. They're amazing at today's standards, but nothing compared to what we'll be able to achieve in the future.

Well once we see the PSP/DS sale #'s we'll see. But almost half the price of a psp, take a guess what kids are goign to be more inclined to get, that can also play their GBA games?

Am I looking ward to both of them? Yes... Will I get both? Probly not, at least not right away. Some people would like to have something new, not just a more powerfull version of something, which is what Nintendo is trying to do, and we'll see what succeeds. I dont know many people willing to dish out 450+ for a handheld for the psp though =/

And for the graphics thing, I meant in todays standards, ofcourse 5-10 years down the road it will be nothing in comparason, but you could keep saying that for any situation.

The prices on them are not yet known, and what I want to know is why Sony in their right mind would charge 450+ for their handheld? I highly doubt that's what it will cost. Consoles don't even cost that much.

As for the PSP, to my knowledge it can also play media from a memory stick. That just makes it a digital music player, and a portable video player. I think it's the best bang for the buck.

Yes, we will see with numbers, but I haven't heard of one person I know wanting the DS. Not one. I know many Nintendo fanboys, and they don't even want to have anything to do with the DS.

I expect that within the next 10 years, we will see Nintendo either be bought by Microsoft or Sony, or they will divert like Sega, and make only games and handheld consoles. If they want to do something new and innovative, make a system thats functional online, much like Valve's Steam system is. You can buy the game online and play it from any other system by entering your user/pass. You download the resources needed to do what you want, and nothing more. Of course this would be for broadband only, but it would really force online play onto the majority of developers and would create a nice new atmosphere. They could also have an Xbox Live like system, where you could voice and chat with friends, browse the net, etc. This to me, would be the new era of video game consoles...consoles that emulate PC's.

Very funny to read Nintendo planes for the future, this company is certainly lives in the past, Nintendo, and that’s a fact doesn’t have much money to develop anything new, their game cube system , as sad as it sounds, is really lame one, even people don’t plan chips for them..

more then that, sadly enough , today people buy games (most of the casual players ) only for graphics, and also if it's fps, then it's already will sell few millions...
Halo for example, is good game, but has nothing new to offer in the fps section, a real blows! this time! Said the commercial to halo two, new particle physics that will allow u to see your vehicle explode in so many directions, you wouldn’t even think is possible, but what is new? nothing!

Only better graphics, and every one favorite FPs game, that can be played online, I am sure that it will sell another thirty million.

Games like super mario (the old one..) won't be available in the next years that for sure, as long as Sony, and Microsoft dominate this world.
Nintendo with the less money will disappear with their new amazing system ... only because they don't have money to support their good ideas...
Games like Zelda, Mario and friends will go, and we will be left with Fps games, and one on one games like DOD3..

    pity.

That's pretty retarded, man. Comparing HALO & HALO 2 to any other FPS is plain Stupid. That's like comparing the original Star Wars Movies to the other movies of the seventies and saying that they're all the same.
    STUPID.
HALO 2 is going to push the envelope even further! It'll be like going from star wars to the original Matrix.
Bungie invented something. They didn't just make "Another FPS."
    You dill hole.
But as far as Nintendo goes, those Japanese Folk always tend to come up with wierd stuff all the time. (I.E. Dance Revolution; N.U.D.E.) It's not going to suprprise me if Nintendo comes out with something like the PSX. Like the same Gamecube with new devices to use as the controller. You know. They're good at doing wierd stuff, those Japs are.

The single most compelling story ever. I mean, if it was a Movie, I'd have watched it and so would have many others. I've even called it Movie when describing it to my friends at times because of the Story.
Best A.I. Ever. No matter which arena you entered, whether it be inside, outside or in a specific corridor, the enemy and Non Player Characters (Marines) never, ever, ever, ever did the same thing twice.
Never once have they done the same thing, and I've beat the game over a hundred times (real #).
Bungie says that they're going to take and make the A.I. even better this go around. For starters just from watching the Demo @ E3, Your fellow Marines can drive you around in the Jeep's turret now! On top of all else, your own marines know when a big cannon is f'n them all up. They know that they have to take it out and will even beckon you to jump in their jeep for help!
I've read the article and every covenant will be smarter and have more of a Killer instinct and better team work when it comes to taking you down! I've read that they'll all know that you're the Primary target, just as our Marines will know that there (I.E.) Cannon is the first that needs to go down. It's going to be great.
Besides that, Better lighting, better pixel shaders with XSN. More Reflection maps and the same massive levels.
Did I mention all those good special moves like speed burst, and knocking someone from their vehicle? I know that even you're interested in trying that one in your local LAN party.
You can't tell me you don't agree.

Again those arn't new ideas. Halo2 (hopefully) will evolve these concepts to the point of perfection. but you cant say that no other game has even attempted what you've listed. I sure you cant name countless game which have (tried) to incorporate better AI, great stories, better graphics, and better online support. Not to detract from halo2, but these are NOT new ideas.

Alright. No, your right. It's just that Bungie does it better, and they've even incorporated it to a point to where we have grudges with the covenant and our Marine's aren't just another slug waiting to die.
In my Opinion, Bungie succeeded in making the most immersive game out there! & one of the things that did it was the incredible A.I. of each different Character!

Honestly, the Gamecube didn't make Mario look or play any better than Mario 64 on the N64. Hopefully, Nintendo will utilize more true three-dimensional graphics this time around.
