GOLD RIVER, B.C. (CP) - Some natives took to dugout canoes Wednesday in a bid to try to thwart the capture of Luna the killer whale.
Seventeen men and women of the Mowachaht-Muchalaht band boarded two traditional craft at the Gold River dock on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The natives said technicians, scientists and veterinarians should leave the orca alone.

An elder said they hope to sing to Luna and draw him away from where officials plan to capture him later Wednesday.

Chief Jerry Jack said the whale is special. "We believe that the spirit of our late chief is in him."
