Angry First try to get on Live.... FAILURE!!!

Ok folks, this is a technical question. I just set up a wireless router today (MN-700). I'm running my laptop on it, but right now it's docked and running off of Port 1 on the 700... when I undock it, it runs wirelessly off of a MN-720 wireless card. I set it all up today and it works like a CHARM all through the house and when it's docked.
My problem is when I went to install the MN-740 Wireless X-Box adaptor (Ethernet Bridge). Lets also add in here that I have a launch edition Box. So anyway, I hook the damn thing up per the instructions, insert the CD, go through the steps.... It finds and lists my SSID, detects my security (128bit WEP) and the key, bla, bla, bla. It even downloads an update for my console. So when I'm about done I get this message that says "There is an error communicating with the wireless adaptor. Please go to www.xbox.com/support" Then when I look at the Wireless Settings screen I see my SSID name up there, status is connected, speed is 0.0Mbps and as it's trying to detect signal strength for 5 seconds or so I get the same message. I tried unplugging it for a few minutes and trying again, re-doing the setup CD, changing to 64bit WEP and changing my SSID and WEP Key, made sure the firmware on it and my router is up to date (it was), and even restored the damn thing to factory defaults and tried a different ethernet cable. I talked to MS about it and we ran through all the same stuff to no avail, same message, same place. I'm going to plug my Xbox directly into the cable modem and make sure I can get on Live (I guess verifying the Ethernet Port is good on the Box) and then call back MS tech support. Now I get to move TVs, and all that fun.
Well, after all that, can anyone think of anything I haven't tried yet that I might be missing. The fact that it sees my SSID and detects my network initially and that the 740 shows up under my network utility lead me to believe that either the stinking 740 is messed up or (Heaven help me) my ethernet port on my Xbox is toast (which I doubt cause I system linked it a week ago). HELP, I was so ready to get on Live.

Update.... Ethernet Port on my Box is GOOD!!! I connected fine to Live when I plugged right into the Router. So I guess I get to drive 3 hours round-trip tomorrow and take this thing back and get one that works (I hope)!

Have you updated the firmware on the MN740? There is a two stage update for the MN740. One updates the bios and the other updates the firmware.
My 740 works like a charm now with my MN500 router. However, out of the box it was extremely erratic and failed to connect several times despite the fact that the router and 740 are in line of sight.

This is what I did because the first few installs failed. This is the best way I discovered.
    Go here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/br..._mn740_102.htm
    Download and save the file.
Unplug your router from the laptop and plug the MN740 directly to your laptop's ethernet port.
Run the update and it will detect and update / reflash / the MN740. You're done.
Hook everything up the way it was and see if it detects and works properly.

That should do it because my 740 behaved spastically at first and it works fine now.
If it doesn't work, the 740 might be messed up.

Yep, I updated it myself when I first brought the 740 onto the network and then again (just so the MS Techie would check the block and get to the next step on fixing my problem). I've run the update currently posted on microsoft's broadband downloads page
    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/br...DLoadMain.mspx
a few times, and every time it sees my 700, 720, 740, and application (software) and it says they are all up to date. My 740 is currently at version 1.3.0.6 for Boot Firmware and version 1.0.2.26 for Runtime Firmware. I'm guessing these are the two types you are talking about... And looking at the versions on that update link you left, I think these are newer. Let me know if you think differently. It's 3:30AM and I'm going to bed, but if you tell me your update is newer, I'll run it tomorrow before I go cruise to take the 740 back to exchange it. Thanks for the help!

And the saga continues....... Ok, so all the stuff above still applies, but I have some more info. Today, for sh$^s and giggles I decided to go in to Network Settings and attempt to connect. It verified that Cables were connected, found the IP address, and found the DNS. Then it stops on the last one (I have no idea what it is) and says Automatically Detecting (or something like that) and gives me the little pinwheel next to that statement. And then it just sits, and sits, and sits.... Never can finish that last damn step to connect. After I make it try to connect, and then back out when it hangs on the last step, all my IP info and DNS info are filled out. I guess they are talking after all. I think my MN-740 is just BROKEN I also talked to my ISP (Adelphia) about whether I need to specify MAC address or Host name and they say "nope". So, can anyone shed some light on something I might be missing on my WiFi router set-up that might be causing this?

Oh, and it gets better. Seems that the entire WORLD is sold out and on backorder status for MN-740s so I can't even swap it out at the store or order a new one!

So how much bandwith problems and lag am I going to see if I just run a stinking 10/100 cord from my office to the Xbox until I get a new 740 (we're talking about 25-30 feet of cord)??? I think this might be my interim fix.

Can you tell I REALLY want to get on Live? My wife is going out of town on Wed and will be gone over the long upcoming weekend.... I am SSSOOOO ready to veg on the couch and play some Live. This is getting so frustrating I'm actually past wanting to break sh*%...... now I'm just hysterically laughing.

Your update was successful when you did it because your numbers are the same as mine.

Open your broadband utility for the router and log in. Go to the main screen that shows all the addresses. Release your IP address and then click on renew. Once it reconnects, we'll work with the new IP information.

Take a paperclip and reset your 740. Hold it down for a few seconds until the lights start flashing and changing and let it go. Once it settles in, we'll hope that all the information is reset in the 740.

Go into the network tab on the Xbox dashboard and change everything to manual configuration.
Change the IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway IP, DNS 1 and DNS 2 to everything your Router's Broadband utility is showing. You will manually input the addresses into the Xbox dashboard.
On the Xbox, make sure everything in the PPPOE setting is blank because that's for DSL connections.
On your router, make sure you have enabled wi-fi access, left the speed at automatic. Turn off MAC filtering, enabled a network name and have a channel set and that channel is broadcasted. Make sure you have written down your WEP code EXACTLY as it is and it's 128bit. (All the "O"'s are zeroes)

Back to your Xbox in the advanced box, hopefully it would have picked your network from the air. If not, it will tell you that other networks have been detected and you'd have to pick the correct one. Enter the WEP code exactly as it is.
There is no need for a specific MAC address to the gateway or host name.

Try to reconnect to live now.

Make sure your router is away from the computer monitor, and make sure the 740 is either directly ontop of your TV (if it's shielded) or a little bit away from it. I put mine on a shelf above the TV.

OK, most of that you probably already done, but sometimes it's good to go back and make sure everything is cool. Let me know what's up.
For what it's worth, I just unplugged everything and reset everything and reinitiated all the connections and my 740 is connected over the air again.
Go to the advance field, it should start trying to detect the 740. Hopefully, if you're lucky it will detect your network.

Ok, check this action out. I sent you a PM but I'll re-iterate it in here. I went in and did all that you told me to. The weird thing is that although my ISP has dynamic IP addresses, everytime I released the routers IP and reconnected, it came up the same (that was three times). Anyway, when I changed everything to manual settings on the dashboard, the settings for IP, DNS, gateway, everything showed up under manual and they matched what the router utility said. I know when I made it try to connect earlier that it found all these addresses. But now I'm getting a new message. It's verifying the cables are connected but it's not finding the IP address (step two of connecting). I dunno. I know the address is the same one as my router (WAN IP address). Should I change it to the IP address for my laptop (the Host on my network)? I'm thinking not.

I got your PM, I sent you what I did. My ISP - Time Warner Road Runner told me that they use dynamic IP addresses, but they only change a few times a year.

Yep, got your PM as well. After digging into settings I think Adelphia assigns theirs for a while too.

Ok, lets talk my interim fix. I'm going to need to make a wired run from my router to the Xbox. Can I use a crossover cable, a Cat5e, or either one I wish? I see something out there about Cat6 cables but I have no idea what they are. I'm guessing that either a standard Cat5 crossover cable or a Cat5e cable will work. Anyone know which will have the least lag with a 50ft run?

Sent you the PM about the cables. Xbox.com/live says to use straight through cables. They are also known as patch cables. Cat5 cables, for what it's worth.
Don't know about the distance maximum though.

Like I said in the PM, I think your 740 doesn't work because of what your tech told you and and all that I did to get online with it.

LOL... nah, nothing you did (I'm not so sure about MS Tech ) messed me up. I really do think it's just broken. I ordered a new one from Best Buy today, and since the whole world is out of them, it'll be here the last week of the month or so. In the meantime I bought a 50ft Cat5 cord. It's probably a good investment in case my wireless ever goes down or the new 740 has the same issues when it gets here. It wasn't expensive and it's a good backup. Guess we'll see about the distance versus lag. I'll run it in the next day or two and definetly be on Live come Friday night looking to get my butt kicked!! Anyway, thanks for all the help and I'll let you know when I'm up and running on the 50 footer and I'll also let you know when and if the new 740 works.

    Default Any luck?

Hey I'm having the same problems right now
Sorry to bring this old thred up but figured it would be easier

Ok I've been trying to go through all the solutions on why my xbox MN-740 doesn't connect to the microsoft wireless router.

-I've updated the firmware on the MN router and checked to see if the MN-740 is up to date.
-I've power cycled both the modem and the router.
-Powered cycled with both along with the xbox turned on and also while it was turned off.
-My xbox says it's connected to my wireless network but when I try to sign in, it wont and I've tried putting the DNS on manual but when it connects then it says couldn't find DHCP or whatever but I've looked and the router is broadcasting DHCP
-I have mac filtering turned off
-I can still connect to my network wirelessly from a laptop at the same time.
-I've also tried to mac spoof it too.

    Any Help?

Resetting the modem (by unplugging it, waiting, and then plugging it back in - give it a minute or so) is the first thing you should always do. Make sure all the cables are plugged in before you reset the modem.

Try connecting...if it doesn't work, call 1-800-4MY-XBOX and don't get off of the phone until you're connected. I had the problem at first, but, all I had to do was reset my modem and I was good to go.
