    Default Adult rated games?

NOTE: I previously posted this thread as "Mature rated games" but I really meant adult rated ones, so I deleted the old thread and reposted. My apologies!

I was about to rate a game that's supposed to come out with an Adult rating and something hit me...

HOW IS THIS GOING TO WORK???

I don't know how these games are going to do sales-wise because of one simple factor: who knows where you'll be able to rent them? I, for one, like to rent before I buy. I've saved untold hundreds of dollars by renting games that I THOUGHT would be cool, but turned out to suck. Many people I know do the same thing.

Now considering both Blockbuster and Hollywood have rules against renting out anything with over an R rating, neither company will be able to carry Adult rated games. And since the independent video stores are being slowly choked to death by these major chains, alternatives are running low.

So what do all of YOU think about this?

Probably stores like EB and Software etc would sell but probably behind the counter and ID checking. Also the Publishing company may sell them from there site.

What's an example of an Adult Rated game and what content will make it receive that rating?

I think EB and Software Etc can sell Adult rated titles as well... so can Media Play and Tower Records.

But I won't go out and buy anything blind, and I know I'm not the only one. I like to rent first... I won't just buy a title because it's Adult rated. I have to be sure it's a good game before I justify spending $50 on it. And if I can't find a place to rent the game, I may never buy it at all.

I don't know if you have one of these around where you live but in my town there is a Movie rental/bookstore called Hastings. It seems to me to be a pretty nice franchise store adn they rent/sale adult material. Heck they even used to rent computer software. One time i rented one of the Leisure Suit Larry games from there. But anyways if they come out with adult rated games i'm sure Hastings will carry them.

Blockbuster in Australia rents R rated movies i.e Porn so I dont see it as being a problem over here, just have to make sure that the salesperson checks the rating and asks for age verivaction.

Well, in the United States, you have to be 18.

Well, in the United States, you have to be 18.
    or know someone that is....

I personally don't think that there are going to be any adult rated games because the game making companys don't want to risk lawsuits and complaints. Giving a game a adult rating is basicly going to cause so much backlash in the gaming community. We all saw the exposure GTA3 got, right? I wouldn't say that the games bad press was not bad exposure because it got the word out that this game is violent and the masses flocked to purchase it. But may people will bring up the concern of how are they going to make sure this game dosn't get sold to kids under 18. Well the only way that that is going to be possible is to hire people in game stores that make good money and actually care about there job and the corporation they work for and when is that going to happen....never! Games are generally considered and childs endenvor, even though that is not the case polititians and the govenment view them as that. Also giving the game a 18+ age limit is going to cut out a chunk of the people that can even purchase the game because they are not old enough....So from a developers stand point their isn't enough money to be made to justify ever even release a adult only game!

I know ****Buster rents out GTA III which is M amoung others like RE, Silent Hill, etc... So I'm not sure what the "Adult" rating is. I've always thought M was the highest (which is stupid because you cant define Mature). It would be very tough to find a game that goes beyond M in retail stores because everyone is so uptight about "protecting" our children from such "filth". I would be very wary of a game that goes beyond M (kind of like Marilyn Manson, shocking at first till you realize he really sucks musically).
Signatures are a boring reminder that everyone might have a personality.

For an example of an AO (Adult) rated game, check out Psychotoxic in XBA's game section. The game looks cool enough, but not something I'd rush out and buy. I'd like to rent first, and I'm afraid there's nowhere near me that will rent out a title with an AO rating.

As for Hastings, I think it's mostly a midwest store. There's one down the street from my grandpa's house in Illinois, but there's not one here in Denver. I wonder who the company is that owns it...
