Looks cool. I see that you can damage buildings. I wonder if you can actually destroy them, as if a full collapse?

Sweet! This game looks like a much more reasonable solution than Tekki...this way you don't need to buy the huge 40 button "joystick". Pretty cool so far Could be a great multi-player game! I plan on looking into this one more in depth

The in-game mechs are finally starting to look as good as the CG mechs in the full motion video from the previous games. Looks like we're gonna get to see more of that Xbox power.

Yes it is JADE. (read below)

Like the MechWarrior games for PC, MechAssault takes place in the thirty-first century BattleTech universe. It's a land dominated by outrageously huge mechs that house an arsenal larger than that of many small countries. The simulation and customization aspects of the MechWarrior games have been greatly minimized in favor of pure action. "We're going to have these thirty-foot mechs that make you feel like Godzilla when he trashes a town," says Weisman. Gitelman excitedly adds, "This game is about shooting **** and blowing it up." Cool.

Microsoft was quick to point out that MechAssault's third-person view helps make the game more accessible to the console market. "The third-person view takes the sim feel out of the series and replaces it with an action feel." The hours of customization you could do in MechWarrior have also been eliminated. That isn't to say you can't tune and tweak your mechs; there are just fewer choices available in order to speed up gameplay. Overall the game is reminiscent of ASCII's Armored Core games for PlayStation and PlayStation2, but with more refinement and a richer setting.

Gitelman is very keen on developing for the Xbox. So much so that he claims, "This is the first time we could fully realize the MechWarrior universe. All the other games have been building up to this game. And we can do it, thanks to the power of the Xbox." While it may read like he's been fed lines by Microsoft's PR wizards, he genuinely seemed excited to be working on the system and bringing his work to a console audience. He's definitely concerned about making the game enjoyable for console gamers and has assembled a team with plenty of console experience. "We're working with a team [Day 1 Studios] that knows consoles. One thing people aren't going to say is, 'Dude, that's a PC game.' There's no way they're going to say that."

The gameplay footage we saw was definitely action-packed. There was a ton of mass destruction going on. If you see something, more than likely you can destroy it. "This is for gamers that think, 'I just want to jump into a mech and blow stuff up,'" says Gitelman. There will be a dozen mechs for you to choose from and 20 missions in which you'll have ample opportunity to "blow stuff up." In addition to a four-player split-screen mode, Internet play will be supported, complete with full-voice communication that will allow you to coordinate attacks or talk smack.

Although the game's graphics weren't as impressive as those in Crimson Skies, they were still very strong. They were chock full of nifty lighting and particle effects, which help intensify all the destruction taking place. Since we were shown video footage we weren't able to gauge what the game will sound like on an actual Xbox, but we were told that it utilizes Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound.

Although there have been mech games on a console before, none draw from the rich BattleTech universe like MechAssault does. It's shaping up to be a frenzied good time that gets to the core of what makes console games fun. Most console gamers don't have the patience for the details and minutiae that PC gamers enjoy. This game takes all that away and sticks to a simple premise: blowing up stuff with a giant robot is cool. Look for MechAssault this November.

With games like Halo, Rallysport Challange, the upcoming Brute Force and now Mech Assault this is just another reason why the Xbox blows the competition away.
