Deadlands the popular undead western tabletop RPG seemed like a no-brainer to be made into a video game franchise. With White Wolf's Hunter: The Reckoning and endless D&D-based titles a big success, it was only a matter of time. Today, Headfirst Productions announced it had acquired the rights to Pinnacle Entertainment Groups RPG franchise and intended to make a series of video games beginning with the summer 2005 release of Deadlands for Xbox, PS2, and PC.
Though there are few details on Deadlands, other than that it will be a third-person action-adventure title, it was revealed that gamers will play as a murdered gunslinger resurrected by an evil spirit. The mysterious undead protagonist, known only as The Stranger, spends the rest of the game seeking revenge against the Seven Sins, a gang of cutthroat criminals out to do no good.
Mike Woodroffe, Managing Director for Headfirst Productions said of the licensing agreements, "With the acquisition of Deadlands in addition to our Call of Cthulhu IP, Headfirst have taken another major step towards our long term objectives." Headfirst will be seeking a publisher at this year's E3. So expect more information later in the year.
