Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams

Overall: This game is very fun and addicting. The story has enough twists and turns in the plot to keep you wondering what the real story is behind Silent Hill and the characters that you meet. The addition of playing as Maria is also very nice and adds more playability. Gameplay is great, graphics are average and don't utilize the capabilities of the Xbox, sounds are great, and lasting appeal is very good for a survival/horror game.

Gameplay: Gameplay is very good. Puzzles are generally pretty cut and dry. Normally you find the answer before you get to a puzzle which is very good. Much like Resident Evil, finding keys to unlock doors is what the majority of your time is spent doing. The weapons are good, but not great. You have the ability to use guns, but it is usually a better idea to fight them with the wooden plank or steel rod. That way you save the ammunition for later in the game when it becomes more important. Controls are also similar to Resident Evil, though that isn't a bad thing. Controlling your character is simple and generally effective.

Graphics: Graphics overall were good, but didn't improve much over the PS2 version. This was the area where Silent Hill 2 could have improved the most. If the developers took more time they could have utilized the Xbox's power better and created a spookier image for Silent Hill. Some areas of Silent Hill are much nicer looking than others. Lighting and shadows were done very well. Character models are average and could have been more detailed.

*EDIT* I have since played the Born From A Wish story and have upped the graphics 1 full point. The graphics in that story are gorgeous. Lighting and Fog are unreal. I shuddered when I saw the fog creeping by the window when I was inside the Baldwin Mansion

Audio: Sounds are done well. I don't have a surround sound setup, but sounds are clear and help maintain the mood of the game. Voice acting was good as well.

Suggestions: Spend more time spent polishing the look of the characters. Bump mapping would been excellent for many areas and surfaces in Silent Hill. The fright factor could have been improved with scarier monsters.
