Gears of War 3 Leak Under Investigation
A portion of Epic Games upcoming Gears of War 3 was recently leaked onto the Internet. Its unknown how the game -- still months away from release -- made it out. Microsoft is looking into the situation and has reassured fans its not the final product thats currently in the hands of modders.
"We have seen the reports of Gears of War 3 content being propped on the Web and working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation," a Microsoft statement sent to IGN over the weekend reads. "This content is not from a final build and is not representative of what fans will enjoy when the game launches."
The leak is said to contain only early campaign content and multiplayer. The leak requires a modded Xbox 360 to play. Since it began being distributed, spoiler-filled videos have shown up on YouTube and elsewhere. If youre keen on avoiding anything related to the games story, be wary of what Gears of War videos you watch over the next few months.
Epic Design Director Cliff Bleszinski directed Twitter followers to the statement yesterday and said, "Here. Please stop asking me about it. Upsetting enough to hear and making more news about it only draws attention. Sad."
Its not the first time this has happened with a Microsoft-published game -- copies of Halo 3: ODST were leaked prior to release, and Halo Reach was, like Gears 3, obtained by hackers. In both cases, however, the games were much closer to release than Gears -- both were out less than a month later, while Gears has another two-and-a-half months to go before its out on September 20.
