Used games on Xbox One: MS’ official stance

Microsoft has released an official statement on May 21 (yesterday) concerning how the Xbox One will handle used games and other online functionality.

Earlier today, Microsoft officially announced their next-generation home console, Xbox One. Over the course of the day, information about various services the system will offer have been reported, but none have caused more confusion than Microsoft’s stance regarding used games on the Xbox One.

In an attempt to clarify the situation and set things straight, Microsoft’s Major Nelson went to his blog where he posted an official statement regarding the Xbox One and used games.

Major Nelson admits that there has been some confusion on the topic of used games when it comes to Xbox One, and released the following statement to help people understand what Microsoft has confirmed today.

“Today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail.

Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios.”

In addition to this used games comment, Major Nelson further clarified that you can play a game you own at a friend’s house as long as you are signed in to your profile. His full statement reads:

“Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend’s house – should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile.”

Clearly there is still much to learn when it comes to used games and Xbox One. For now, it is best to take the statement from Major Nelson and wait for new details to be shared closer to E3 2013 this June.
