Ubisoft: Companion apps will work on their own, as their own game
Players won’t necessarily need to own Ubisoft’s upcoming games to use their companion apps, CEO Yves Guillemot said during an earnings call today.
Guillemot referenced several "breakthroughs" the company has integrated into The Crew, Tom Clancy’s The Division and Watch Dogs. For example, each game contains "seamless solo, co-op and multiplayer" that he believes will "bring in new players that, today, do not dare to try traditional multiplayer or co-op modes."
He also spoke of games’ integration with companion apps on smartphones and tablets. The Division’s companion app, for example, allows players to view and interact with the game in real-time, as seen in the game’s E3 2013 demo. This functionality is important, he said, because it provides "low barriers to entry" for players.
"Our games are leveraging the accessibility brought by tablets and mobile touch interfaces," Guillemot said. "It will allow players to engage with our universes, wherever, whenever they want. For example, a player could be joining his friends on a mission in The Division using his tablet or mobile phone. He doesn’t need to be in the same location. He doesn’t need to own the console version of the game. He just needs to download the app."
