Ask Tim Sweeney
Voodoo Extreme has just posted their latest installment of "Asking Tim Sweeney." Today Sweeney tackles a wide range of questions dealing with NVIDIAs GeForce III card. Here is a sample:
Question: How hard is it for developers to add GeForce 3 optimizations to their games? Is it feasible for developers to release patches for current games to add GeForce 3/DirectX 8 optimizations?Tim: Youre completely missing the point of the new DirectX8 feature set. Its not about performance, its about enabling developers to render things that were impossible to render before, like bump-mapping and anisotropic lighting. While you could patch an existing game to add some support for these features, it would be extremely limited and counterproductive to do that. The games that really shine on DirectX8 and Xbox will be the onces that are designed from the beginning to take major advantage of those features.
