Codemasters to remake legendary Sensible Soccer franchise

Traditional top-down football heading to PC, Xbox and PS2

British publisher Codemasters has announced the return of its legendary football franchise, Sensible Soccer, which is currently in development with original game creator Jon Hare, for Xbox, PC and current generation consoles.

The new version follows the success of the mobile version, developed by Tower Studios and published by Sheffield-based Kuju Entertainment. Kuju, together with Jon Hare and Codemasters founders David and Richard Darling, will collaboratively develop the new Sensible Soccer, due for release in the second quarter of 2006.

In a recent interview, Jon Hare commented: "There is no reason why Sensible Soccer cannot outsell FIFA and PES."

"The quick gameplay and overhead view giving 100 per cent controllability when shooting at goal is something that it is impossible for PES and FIFA to do with their side on cameras," he added.

Featuring over 50 preset competitions from around the world, Sensible Soccer 2006 will also ship with over 100 upgrades, un-lockable features and bonus content, with specific 15th anniversary content to be announced closer to the game’s release. Codemasters Mobile will also release a dedicated mobile phone spin-off to the new game to coincide with the launch.

"We are doing everything in our power to modernize and recreate the sheer playability, fun and footballing depth of the original and remind the playing public just what they have been missing out in the current market of slow, drab sims," Hare stated.

As excitement builds for the remake of the classic franchise, it’s possible that Codemasters may look deeper into its archives, and the potential for further remakes of classic gaming IP has not been ruled out.
