Xbox 360 Failure Rates “A Moving Target”

Fielding questions from readers as part of a Mercury News interview, Moore was touchy on the subject of Xbox 360 failure rates. When asked about system failures, widely thought to afflict at least 3% of 360s, Moore dodged the question, instead choosing to focus on the customer service offered in the advent of system problems. “I can’t comment on failure rates, because it’s just not something – it’s a moving target. What this consumer should worry about is the way that we’ve treated him. Y’know, things break, and if we’ve treated him well and fixed his problem, that’s something that we’re focused on right now. I’m not going to comment on individual failure rates because I’m shipping in 36 countries and it’s a complex business.” Moore preferred to divulge on other subjects, notably Microsoft’s desire to expand the console’s user base. He identified this as Microsoft’s key challenge for 2007, acknowledging that the Xbox 360 could be more appealing to non hardcore gamers. “… We’re not blind to the fact that we continue to need to make our platform more approachable. Our work with Activision in making Guitar Hero such a success over the last couple of weeks, I think, is the tip of the iceberg of some of the work you’re going to see around a more approachable platform. At the same time, I don’t want to lose my hard-core guys, who I love to death and who are huge fans of what we do,” he said. Asked about the viability of using Xbox 360 for networked computing projects in the same way Sony has deployed the PS3, Moore was initially skeptical. “I’m not quite sure yet whether we’re seeing real tangible results from the PlayStation 3 Folding@home initiative,” he offered, before warming to the possibility a little. “…If we truly believe that we can in some way marshal the resources of a much larger installed base of Xbox 360 owners, with a processor that’s of equal power to the PS3, then you have my have my commitment that we’ll look at that.”
