The Jackal
Date reviewed: June 11, 2005.

Overall: This game was absolute junk to me. The look was unique but it really didn't play that well and the graphics weren't smooth at all! The only good thing was the character designs. I wanted to buy this game before it came out but after renting it I regretted giving up my $7. Don't play this.
Gameplay: The game was fun kinda because you could smash anything in site and fly around places at times. As well the moves each character had made it cool but the game really wasn't that fun. It was just the same go to a level and kill everything you see. Not much tactic to it at all. Just rush in and smash smash smash.
Graphics: Visually the game was choppy. Not smooth during gameplay at all. The look was very different which was nice bu it just wasn't smooth. The bosses and all the enemies were poorly done but the characters you got to be were really neat I think. I enjoyed them very much.
Sound: Didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the sounds in this game. The noises other characters made were lame though and all your characters' sounds were was the weapons swinging around. Not a whole lot put into this aspect. I also got sick of the narrator's (or whatever it was) voice. They tried makin it sound like your concsious kinda thing but it was so monotone and boring.

Overall: first of all, in response to symposiumx, you are dieing because your magic has run out, and that is what keeps you alive (listen to the princess once in a while, will ya?)... and even if you hear the heartbeat and the orbs turn black, you have a long time left....

WELL ANYWAY...this game is foookin awesome.... all of the elements of this game make for a great gaming experience.... relativly short, with really hard spots (you have no idea how hard), but definitely worth the money... longevity is not so great, if that is a factor for you...
Gameplay: GREAT!!! i agree with some previous reviews, quite repetitive, but the sheer... funness (?).... of it makes it worth buying the game... i love experimenting with all the different types of weapons, magics, and accessories...
Graphics: beautiful graphics... nor better than some of the games that have come out lately (POP, Gaiden), but amazing in their own right... i think these graphics are more artistic than realistic, which gives the game a whole new dimension...
Sound: music, though odd, is great... it doesn't really fit the style or pace of gameplay, but it fits the mood, so its sufficent... voices, oh voices.... i want to rip the vocal cords from the english voice actors OMFG they are so bad... luckily, we have japanese, and i cant tell the difference (except for the long pauses, what up with that?).... and finally, gameplay sounds... amazing!!! the sounds when you whack an enemy or crumble a pillar, etc., are great...

thus, i give sound a 4.5 mainly because of the horrible voice acting, good (but not great) music, and great gameplay sounds...
Suggestions: just make the game overall better... add more to the huge array of weapons, and make even more hidden treasures... basically, just take every aspect of the game, make it better, add more of it, etc... otogi 2 looks promising....

Hard Boiled Cop
Date reviewed: January 5, 2004.

Overall: A action adventure game that is set in ancient Japan with mythical creatures. You take the role of Raikou, a member of the death clan who is charged to take people's life when their time is up. One day you defy the clan and you are sent to a place in between life and death. You're given a second chance where you take out demons in this hack and slash game. Forget about the plot, just play this absolutely stunning looking game and find out for yourself.
Gameplay: Not the best gameplay I've seen. The repetition when fighting is dull and boring. You see a demon, hack 'n' slash and you do the same stuff again. At least in some areas of the game, you don't just kill, you run away. This breaks up the repetition a bit. Camera angles are dodgy like hell. You don't know what you're hitting because there's something blocking your vision.
Graphics: This is one of the most stunning looking game ever. The environments alone can make this game feel so !&%$@#* atmospheric. The little details in the creatures that you're about to kill are amazing. They really do look scary. Everything looks it's part. The destruction of everything is absolutely brilliant.

Sound: The Japanese orchestral sounds have never been so atmospheric in a video game before. This is great. The music alone can make the environment scary. The sound of the building collapsing are excellent.
Suggestions: Avoid combat repetition.
Fix the camera angles.
Don't make it friggin hard!

Overall: Otogi is an excellent game for the person who is a hardcore action/ adventure gamer, who would also appreciate the aspect of hints of RPG gaming without getting too technical. A 'very' Japanese style of game within regards to sounds, fighting styles, characteristics, etc., this game gives you the feel as if you were playing a true import. More than 25 levels(I am stuck on 24) with beautiful interactive environments for you to wreck and obtain various items from. A vast arsenal of weapons that could be broken down for each stage of the game, magic powers either to crush multiple foes, or one giant catipilliar, and accessories to increase your potency. It's game like this that make you appreciate the quailty and the power of the 'X'.
Gameplay: Otogi has a real good game play to it. Between combining fighting moves, dash attacks, and magic, you turly are a demon killing machine. Camera movements, and action moves are fast, but at times limiting when needing specific angles of view. Some levels require great detail attention, some require you to move quickly. Through levels you can loose life points and magic, which can be regained by killing demons, and obtaining items. Overall an great game play with very minor flaws.
Graphics: Visually Otogi is stunning. Giving you the feel of the landscape of ancient Japan. Characters and demons are well detailed. And menu screens are visually georgeous.
Sound: Otogi's sound are excellent from the music of anicent Japan, to the sword slashing, and magic attacks, it truly is a treat for the ears.
Suggestions: Thank you for a great game, I look forwad to Otogi 2 (spring 2004), It would be cool if the camera angles could be improved on.

Overall: I never played anything much like this it was very different and was really fun and they did a great job. Easy controls and gameplay made it really awsome. It was awsome that everything was destructable and there were alittle side mission such as find spirts and destroying stuff and what not.
Gameplay: I thought it was smooth i didn't experience any slow down and the levels were fun but some of them were the same levels just different atmosphere but i still liked it. I loved bashing demonds against the walss and ground. The missions were straight forward and were fun throughout the game. Some were a challenge but nothing a couple retry's couldn't solve.
Graphics: The visuals were pretty good i think especially the effects of the rain storm and heat waves from lava morphing the screen almost. The enemies could've been alittle better but everyhting was very creative and looked really good they made you feel the enviroment around you. The spells and smashing and bashing looked really cool too i wish i had a huge high definition tv with it.
Sound: The sound was great for this game it matched prefectly. From the spells to the screams of the monsters, to the blowing up of buildings to the eirie voice talking to you through out the game telling you what to do.
Suggestions: I think you should have made it a bit longer but i loved this game and hope that we get teh second one over here. Everything was great and my favoritest part was the weather effects in the rainstorm and lava levels.

Overall: Interesting concept; beautiful graphics - horribly canceled out by an idiotic life/magic system. My happiest moment with this game was trading it for more than I bought it for.
Gameplay: symposiumx (below) nailed it with his description of the "hurry up or die" gameplay. Being dropped in a lush, graphic environment is indeed heaven, but being forced to move on without exploring it while you slowly die is hell. good riddance to this game.
Graphics: As with most "Xbox only" titles, this one is might purdy - wish I could've stuck with it to see some of the nice pictures on the back of the box.. oh well.
Sound: Nice heartbeat noises - you'll hear them a lot when you're about to die. All the frickin' time.

Overall: A fantastic game concept mared by an unforgiving 'health system'. The concept of being a servent of some higher power, sent on quests to "purify" areas of demons is very cool. I was VERY much looking forward to this game...alas, after playing for a few hours I wanted to strangle someone with my controller cord.
Gameplay: This is where the game falls apart in my opinion. Right off the bat, with the controls, I'm let down. Why the hell would yo umake a game where when you push left, the camera pans right...and vice versa? urgh!! now...the coupe de grace...the HEALTH SYSTEM. What the bloody hell is going on with this? I'm at full health then out of nowhere, I hear the heartbeat warning showing i'm on the verge of death. I guess the developers wanted to speed things up and make it more intense by forcing you to constantly fight demons or lose health. For me, this RUINED the game. It turned a game that would have been a highly enjoyable slashing/thinking action/rpg into a button mashing frenzy. Considering that once you get in the "danger zone" the only way to gain life is to "purify" demons, you end up running for the nearest creature, and madly slapping buttons to kill it before you're hero myseterisly perishes. Making a game INSTENSE is one thing...making it pull-my-freakin'-hair-out frustrating is another!
Graphics: Overall, the game had some decent graphics. It shines in its magic use...expecially the boosting up and watching the colours change and swirl. The enemies seemed a little....hmmm..lacking visually?
Sound: Sounds seems middle of the lane most of the time. There were a few cool sounds and music to draw you in. On the flip side the game grates on audial nerves with some downright annoying sounds (i.e. one boss saying "none shall pass" about a gazilllion times over and over)
Suggestions: adjust the controls, and for the love of buddah...implement a new health system. The character should only lose life when he's HURT by something, NOT just as a way to keep the gamer hurrying through the game!

Overall: An amazingly fun game, the graphics are pretty sweet your character is awesome looking. I have only played the demo but I am going to buy it. I reccomend this to any fan of hack and slash games and to anyone who likes ninjas/samurais/and the undead. This game is just great
Gameplay: SO MUCH FUN! EASY CONTROLS SO JUST PICK UP THE CONTROLLER AND START PLAYIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You can also pick your own weapons which is really cool!
Graphics: Great graphics they look really cool and they fit the game perfectly. The bad guys also look pretty friggin awesomely awesome!
Sound: Aweosme sound effects iif u have surround sound then ur in for more of a treat. Cool !&%$@#* kicking noises everytime you swing ur club,s

Overall: Okies, first of all, if you haven't pick this one up, go out and get it right away !! Once you put it in your Xbox, you won't notice any change make in your real world cause you are too concentrate on the screen of your TV. We are in need of this one for since the launch of Xbox. From Software have just granted our wishes by making this one the best of action/adventure title.
Gameplay: You are undead warrior named Raikoh, awaken to destroy every demons that the evil has unleash on the earth. You are guided by a myterious voice on your long journey. To help you on your mission, there are tons of weapons, special items and powerful spells you can acquire in stages or buy from the shop. Each time you enter a stage, your objective will be to destroy every demons or specific monsters. Be careful, your life will decrease when your magic meter going to 0. So use your magic wisely or you will be ban from the living world. That's the only thing i don't really want, like you are in a counting time to finish the level, so you are in stress. Sometimes, i don't even have a chance to see the wonderful backgrounds of the stage cause i fear i have no time to complete the stage. By the way, like you need to find demons to slash or your magic can't hold you for a long time. This game isn't easy, the stages are going fast to become extremely hard.
Graphics: Visuals are spectacular even when you only slash a demon, a lot of particle effects is flashing on your screen, make you blink (in a good way). The fog in this game is soo cool, sometime it make you fall down from the top of mountains, just watch you step.
Sound: Musics and sound are the best ones for a game like this. Some songs are creepy, others are truly in the style of japanese mythical themes.
Suggestions: Ok, a sequel is on the way, bring it here... :)

Overall: Very good game. Beautiful graphics, sweet !&%$@#* gameplay, awesome weapons, magics, and amulets to purchase, yet it is flawed wit unforgiving difficulty.
Gameplay: This gameplay is so !&%$@#* fun and crazy, it makes Shinobi look pathetic. You are a samurai on a mission to cleanse Japan from demons. Your character moves extremely fast, and is hella powerful. You could pretty much destroy anything. But like I said, the difficulty is far too high. And you can't even adjust it. You'll be replaying stages 10 times and then it'll be hard for you to play that stage again cuz you'll be pissed from frustration. But despite that one flaw, this game shouldn't be overlooked.
Graphics: Friggin' beautiful. Lighting effects, everything, is jus beautiful. Smooth characters even add another plus
Sound: Very tight. The sounds are perfect for this game. Everything you destroy sounds like its really crumbling, every demon you slaughter will holler in pain while death slips in their grip. Very well done.
Suggestions: Well done Sega. Much props to you for the making this beautiful game. But, if you do make a sequel, please make the game a tad bit more merciful? Its difficulty is far too high. But otherwise, I hope you have a sequel in the works.

Overall: i should done my review a few days
ago,but i can,t stop playing OTOGI since
is the xbox's answer to devil may cry for
the ps2.besides every body is concern
about soul calibur 2,but i am not and i
will highly recomend this great game to
everybody since is $40 and it looks
almost as good as panzer dragon orta.
Gameplay: gameplay is almost identical to
shinoby,but don,t fool yourselves
thinking this is shinoby,because otogi
has better graphics, sound and all kinds
of swords and magic spells. more than
25 weapons,four different magic spells
with 3 different levels each and some
magical accesories. raiko is the main
character of the game and he will be
guide by a ancient princess, besides she
will sell, buy and repair every item you
need at the store to get ahead in the
game.from weapons to magic spells and
accesories.
Graphics: this game shows the power of the xbox
just like panzer dragon orta, otogi is
almost close to perfection, but i hope from
software make bigger enviroments on
the sequel.
Sound: sound is so original and great,so i won,t
make any complaints,besides i been
playing this game since it first came out.
Suggestions: just make the enviroments bigger and
add some extra modes like legendary or
super hard,so we can all play the game
over and over, besides make raiko able
to use other weapons during combat,so i
don,t have to go back to the main tittle
screen and final make a sequel please.
GREAT JOB BY SEGA AND FROM
SOFTWARE. it's worth $40

Overall: You awaken in a void, a silky angelic voice calling you forth. A man whose face meant death in life, you have seeimingly been brought back to a shade of life in order to save humanity from a demonic invasion. From the void you are transported into a bamboo thicket filled with gigantic cawing bird-beasts. The magic of the Princess flows through you as you draw your battered sword Soul Shrine. With a superhuman leap into the air, your one-warrior assault is on...
Gameplay: One word: fluid. Otogi offers up a simple, yet varied control scheme that makes use of the button setup quite well. The learning curve is rather smooth, and before you know it, you are playing more as a mid-air combatant than a running, slashing earthbound warrior. The camera is decent, however during some large battles it can be cumbersome to try and utilize attack buttons, camera (R thumbstick), and targeting/dash moves. With very little slowdown at all, the game runs extremely smooth, whether you are bashing through walls or racking up combos on multiple foes.
Graphics: Beautiful game. Otogi is Xbox Only, and it shows. There are tons of gorgeous effects and surroundings. On one of the first levels you must battle a 'flock' of flying Yasha Ravens near a large building. When bashing through the walls and staircase of the building, the dust effects, mixed with the fireballs being hurled at you, make for some really awe inspiring eye-candy. The color pallette is very next-gen. Although pinks and purples abound, there are some great golden, airy effects as well as some dark, brooding levels. Screenshots do not do Otogi much credit, as in play the game is simply amazing. While some may say Smilebit's Panzer Dragoon Orta is better graphically, I'm much more fascinated with the strange creatures and wonderful effects of Otogi.
Sound: Nothing spectacular here. The sound is slim, and very, very Japanese. Otogi does a good job of letting you know aurally that you best get to cracking demon skulls to beef up your magic when it's low. When your health drops, you are also greeted by a distinct, glass-breaking sound. Swords clang, birds squawk, and the environment moans in its surreal, string oriented undertones. As minimal as the game is on story, so it is on sound. The only reason I didn't give it a '4' can be summed up in these few words: "NO ONE SHALL PASS!" Don't worry, you'll understand.
Suggestions: Make a sequel. Add armor and more items. Beef up the RPG elements from 'lite' to 'hefty'. Provide an in-game 'unlockables' screen for levels once they have been beaten. It is infuriating not knowing what to do to unlock the special weapons and items.
