Shadow Ops: Red Mercury is neither a squad-based FPS nor a stealth game. Instead, it's a balls-to-the-wall shooter requiring players to shoot and move, lean, crouch, and reload, and blast through wave after wave of aggressive AI opponents. Company President Mark Long, who has credits on games such as those aforementioned as well as Zork Nemesis is a die-hard FPS fan, with a particular bent for visceral immersion. When IGN visited the Seattle studio for an all-day affair, Long explained that after the first time he watched Black Hawk Down, he yearned for a game that played as intensely, as steadily, and that looked as cinematic as that Director Ridley Scott's re-creation of that US failed Somalia military campaign.
From the looks of it, Zombie has created just such an endeavor. Shadow Ops: Red Mercury is short on talk, long on insanely intense shooting. The game is stacked with an extensive set of modes to back it up. The single player campaign comprises 24 levels, with five major locations ranging across the planet, Chechnya, Paris, France, the Congo, Syria, and Russia. For those without an online connection, Zombie has created a two-player coop campaign that's 10 missions long, each one different than those in Campaign mode. Those with LAN connections can hook up via System Link for two- to four-player battles, or they can play two- to four-player split-screen matches. Finally, those with Xbox Live can engage in extensive online battles in four modes, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and VIP Escort. So, basically, anyway you slice it, you're covered.
The game follows lead military expert Frank Hayden on the search for an insurgent group of terrorists with the new-fangled Red Mercury technology. What's Red Mercury? Though fictional, it's essentially the biggest dirty bomb you've ever seen, powerful enough to create a nuclear explosion, and small enough to fit inside a briefcase. The perfect terrorist tool, and the ultimate national nightmare for any legitimate nation. Hayden and his two-member team must find the people responsible for the stuff and extinguish them for good.
