Nvidia shares, already bruised by Wall Street over the company's recent accounting troubles, took another blow in early trading this morning on a rumor coming from a UK web site that that chip maker has been "cut out" of the Xbox 2 reference platform. The rumor began in a column at The Inquirer written by Eva Glass, who says that Taiwanese chipmaker Via Technologies and ATI are in the running to replace Nvidia in the next incarnation of the Xbox, for cost reasons.
Glass did not state where she received this information, so it is open to intense scrutiny -- yet the rumor scared enough investors to drive Nvidia shares down $2.68 in early Friday trading.
