Bungie Video Teases New Game
The new project is related to Halo 3, but how? Video inside.
by Ryan Geddes

September 25, 2008 - The wait is over, Halo fans. Well, sort of. After its aborted countdown at E3, Bungie Studios started the clock ticking again this week, and this morning a new teaser trailer was deployed on the developer's Web site.

Labeled "Keep it Clean", the short video opens with what appears to be flaming spacecraft plummeting toward the surface of a planet as it enters the atmoshpere, and the camera cuts back and forth between the speeding craft and what look like security cameras in large metropolitan areas.

In the lower right-hand corner of each cam is a name – one is labeled Lumumba and another says Mbaraki – and as the sky darkens with incoming ships on the latter camera, the words "threshold trigger" pop up on the screen before the cam tilts to take in the scene. In the upper right-hand corner of the screen is the gray profile of a head with elongated white eyes.

As the ships crash toward the cities, buildings shake and the cameras go black for a few seconds. Then a screen with the words "Please remain calm" pop up – these are the images Bungie has been teasing fans with on its Web site since E3. After that screen fades, a computer system reboot takes place and the words, "warning, metropolitan disaster" scroll by, along with some other messages about power status and communications.

When the cameras come back up, they show a scene of devastation – the city streets are littered with rubble as yet more ships scream toward the surface.

At the end of the video, the words Prepare to Drop flash by, and a Halo 3 logo pops up. Are the craft in the video Covenant drop ships? Who is the avatar shown in the HUD on-screen? How is this new Bungie project tied in with Halo 3? Mysteries, all. But we do know that Halo 3 was released one year ago today, and Bungie just can't resist an anniversary.

It's worth noting that Lumumba and Mbaraki are African names – Patrice Lumumba was Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo, and Mbaraki is a port in Kenya. Other than that, there are few clues in the new trailer. We know the mysterious project will be tied to Halo 3, but beyond that we'll just have to wait and see.
