Rumours on new titles being announced in March

A new Killer Instinct rumoured for the umpteenth time

With all the previously known projects from Rare already in stores, and 4J Studios’ remake of Tooie coming in a couple of months (http://mundorare.com/news/2009/01/banjo-tooie-xbla-will-have-the-original-stop-n-swop/), Rare fans will now have to wait until the company decides to reveal their next title. From experience, this could be either in a major event, or any random week. But, in both cases, rumours usually precede the event.
This could (or could not) be the case with one of the latest gossips around the Net about Microsoft preparing an imminent announcement of “two new IPs by Q1 2009.” Rumour has it that Microsoft “has at least two new properties that have been in development for quite sometime,” according to V for Videogames (V4VG) (http://v4vg.com/rumor-microsoft-to-announce-two-new-ip%E2%80%99s-by-q1-2009/).
This website even quotes an anonymous Microsoft spokesperson who dares to state the following: “We’ve always focused our attention in the year of operation concerned, I would safely say that our community will see atleast two new games being announced exclusive to the Xbox 360 console by the end of Q1 2009″. V4VG itself also adds that “one might actually be an online fighter based on a very popular franchise,” while “the other is an action adventure game from one of their internal studios.”
Killer Instinct probably was the first thing that popped in your mind. And while there are reasons to be skeptic about a KI3, both Microsoft (http://mundorare.com/news/2008/08/perfect-dark-and-killer-instinct-coming-to-xbla/) and Rare (http://mundorare.com/news/2008/11/if-we-could-bring-back-one-game-it-would-be-killer-instinct-arcade/) have already expressed their interest on bringing back the classic fighter to XBLA.

Still, we must admit that this sounds a bit confusing, since “a very popular franchise” is not what we could exactly consider a “new IP.” Moreover, the souce itself hasn’t been proven to be any trustworthy on this matter before, and those two titles would not necessarily have to come from Rare. But we wanted to bring this to your attention since, with the Nintendo DS out of sight (http://mundorare.com/news/2009/02/rare-not-developing-new-ds-titles-at-present/), sooner or later Rare will have to unveil which their next big project is. Place your bets!

rare has said this for years and hasn't delivered on any of it. there was even a rare ad 3 christmases ago where in the stockings were different rare titles that were said to come to the 360 and in one of the stockings was a Killer Instinct 3 logo. Bottom line though, I'll believe it when I see it from rare. they have had plenty of time since KI Gold on the N64 to develop and release a new KI but they don't... granted I guess I should be more paitent, I mean look how long it took for there to be a Street Fighter 4, instead of another alpha street fighter 3 turbo delux hyper championship ultra ex2 something-or-other.

Same here.

It seems it is what the fans want. Why they wouldn't do that, doesn't make any sense.

i'd love to see a direct port of ki2 w/ full motion video sequences included come to xbla. but alas, its rare's decision and has been for years.

Its your standard 2D fighting game. They have characters like Jago (a ninja), Combo (a boxer), Fulgor *don't know if I spelled that right (a killer robot), and more. Each char. has indv. special attacts and they were the 1st fighting game back in the day to introduce the "combo breaker" system. Also back in the day they were the first to introduce the "ultra combo" where you would do a button input when your opponent's health bar was flashing red and you could pull off anywhere between a 60-80 hit combo. The animations were great back in the day and when you pulled off an ultra combo it gave you time to sit back, and enjoy the beating you just gave your opponent. Also the announcer would be belting out "ULTRA... ULTRA... ULTRA..." at the end of your combo so that as they walked away they could hear it haunt them. Its an amazing title that Rare for some reason has promised for the past years to bring out a killer instinct 3 but never has delivered. Rare has done teasers for christmas a while back where in the stockings hanging over the mantle there was a game in one of them and it said KI3. Alas, that has never come to be so I think a lot of people are like me and that they'll believe it when they see it.

Rare has always been odd...they do what they want regardless.

it almost reminds me in some aspects to bungie when they said that halo 2 would be out "when we're finished with it". the difference being that gamers wanted halo 2 and they got it, rare though...... thats another story.

Although I am not a big fighting game fan, Killer Instinct was an awesome game and if they are to bring all of the old fighters into the new game I might just hafta buy that game then. Cool post and information, thanks :)

They should start developing it now, take their time, make it a masterpiece, and releases it as a launch title for the next XBox.

doubtfull though that they will do it. If you think about it the last KI title was released on the N64, and they've had since waayyyy back when to develop this title. I wouldn't hold my breath for this one, but if it does happen... ohhhhhhhhh...

No point in waiting 6 years for a game! Rare and microshaft are in talks at the moment anyways and they might be droped but this is only stipulation anyway
