The patent news continues to roll in from Microsoft. After recent news that the company was patenting a method for controlling a camera comes news that it has patented drop-in co-op play in shooters. This news comes via Kotaku.

Like the camera control patent, this one was filed back in the days of the original Xbox around the time Brute Force was in development. This one is for a system in a squad-based shooter that allows players to seamlessly join a game already in progress by splitting the screen for a second player. That squad could then disband and have the game move back to a single, full screen without reloading the level.

wow, talk about making sure that the 360 is the cornerstone of the videogame industry! Imagine what the devs for the other systems think about this? This will end up doing one of two things, or maybe both 1) REALLY hurt the other video game consoles, 2) provide MS a MASSIVE profit boost by selling off rights to allow drop in co-op in their games for other systems, or 3) both 1 & 2
