GGrrr......I hate screw-ups!

So anyone else on here try and make a plate,and no matter WHAT you do,it just keeps having problems no matter what you do?Well,I'm currently having tons of problems with two distinct plates that I've had ideas for for a long time,but the Tiki Gods that I worship do not wish it so!

So,lets call this post the screw-up thread(or falldowndrunk screw-ups,if no one else posts)!Lets post pics of mid to near complete plates that you are working on,and something just isn't right,or there's something missing.I'm gonna go grab my camera,and take a pic of a plate I have ALWAYS wanted,and,even though Spacey somehow stole my idea years before I even knew he existed(your scary!),I'll post it here.Expect an edit in a few moments with the pic!(My ADD caused me type this message before any prep work has been done.That's because I'm awesome and rarely make sense.)


Okay,I'm back.Took abit longer to come back because I wanted a root beer float.Nummy. Anyway,here the first pic.All of these pics will look kinda funny cause I sharpened em way up to really show the flaws.

So heres the plate I was working on.Simple plate,originally I wanted it in blue as a throwback to Cobra Commander,but,after painting it blue,it looked like crap.So,even though it pained me to do so,I used black so everyone can say I ripped off Spacey.Meh.Only real difference is that I used a dark crimson instead of brick red.But,I do believe cause my paint sucks,it STILL came out looking crappy.Boo.

Still soldiering on(heh,G.I. Joe,soldiering,I made a funny!) I went ahead and clear coated it.Some small mistakes can be covered up that way,and I took a chance.It worked,kinda.But,as you can see from the sharpening of the pic,the clear coat left little "ripples" along the edge of the plate.It looks like a friggin shark.That would be awesome,but its a G.I. Joe Plate,not a shark plate.MEH!

Last but not least,the biggest crap spot on the plate,the "Pooling".I don't have ANY idea how this happened,cause I BARELY put that much clear coat on,and sprayed far enough away that this shouldn't have happened.But,as I said before,I must've pi**ed off the Tiki Gods cause they do NOT want this plate looking nice.I need some sandpaper,and I'll sand down those areas and redo them black to see if that helps,then post the results here.

So, anyone else have anything to share?I'm sure I'll keep adding to this post,kinda like a "Bloopers" reel for everyone.Or you can pretend your reading a script from Home Improvement,and I'll play the part of Tim,and Spaceghost can be Al.That works for me.

Your awesomeness is almost too much for this one thread to handle.

Yeah seems as though the Tiki Gods aren't helping yu much at all... I'm sure soon I'll have some diaster pics to share w/ you so I'm sure you aren't the only one falldown, don't worry. Practice makes perfect I guess they say.

Actually,that was kind of my point of this post.Just to show newbs to painting in general that EVERYONE has bad experiences,rookie to veteran alike.I have tons of experience painting miniatures and such,but its a whole nother ballgame when painting on a flat(concave),smooth surface.Dry brushing isn't helping me here at all durnit!!

Plus,disasterpieces are just funny.Maybe not when your in the middle of painting them,but after.Just figured I'd share one of my current frustrations,and hope people do the same.

Thats alright,I'm working on a big project(big for me anyway),that I'm almost positive will be screwed up here soon.Should be fun!

I've only done one faceplate and it was a joint effort between me and a friend. Whatever paint he used took over a week to fully dry but it turned out ok.

I've tried 2 wireless controllers on my own though and a Guitar Hero II guitar. All 3 bubbled or wrinkled, effectively ruining the cases (Spacey was able to save one of the controllers for me however).

What I learned - Gotta sand everything first, sealers and plastic spray paint don't work well together (at least in my experience), and everyone who works at Home Depot has a room temperature IQ.

He paid $57 for that plate with the chainsaws, then put a bunch of extra red paint on it and ruined it. Now he's got it for sale again. The feedback he left me for the grenade he bought said that he'd already painted silver lightning on it. Not quite sure what the deal is. I'm not going to point and laugh or anything because he might end up a member here. You never know. But I'm certainly scratching my head.

I saw that on their, I knew it looked different, just couldn't place it. I saw the Halo one, I knew it wasn't you.
As for the screw ups, the controller came out good, thats a pic before clear coat, and the bottom piece being painted again, friend ruined it.
Faceplate, I started on last night. It started to bubble like that halo plate pic, but I got it all level. I will definitely have a pic of both up by Monday of them finished.

Wow,I never had em bubble THAT bad.That ebay link made me feel a slight bit better bout my own plates though,lol.

I'm sure you already know this,but one way to limit any bubbling is to hold the spray paint far from what your painting,and only do one coat at a time.Flats tend to bubble less also.After it drys a little bit,allpy the next coat.If you start to see little air bubbles,gently poke them with a small brush and they'll pop easy enough.hat,and as long as the paints still wet,it'll still coat evenly.

That reminds me,what kind of paint are you guys using?I know spacey's,he's got a list of what he uses on another thread.I mainly use Acrylics nowadays,Just cause they're easier to mix and if I have streaking,just dab a bit of water on a brush,and viola,easy fix!!

I've been useing the Duplicolor touch up spray paint. The colors selection rocks, I use their adhisive promotor, then paint, come out great. My plate started bubbling cause my friend just told me he rubbed the plate after I washed it and before I started painting. I put a few coats on and it leveled out.

I've had that happen on a couple of model I've painted, I think it's dirt or some kind of contaminant that cause it.

That's a pic of the lower part of a Spartan helmet. The pink went on fine. The clear coat went on fine but it wasn't shiny enough. The polyurethane went on fine but I missed a spot. I went over it again after it had dried and it all shriveled up. I sanded it down a bit and tried to hit it with paint again, and it just shriveled up in more places. I'l going to have to take some solvent and remove the paint, then try it again from the beginning. Sadly, I have too many things going on right now to screw with this any more at the moment.

Yes,that's exactly what I keep having problems with.It's like if I try and put of second coat of clear coat on,that's the crap that happens EVERY TIME.Maybe I should just put one coat and leave well enough alone,but then I'm paranoid it's gonna get scratched.Damned if I do,damned if I don't I guess...

just as a joke i asked the seller about the paint issue and he answered like this(...enjoy...)IT HAS A SPECIAL EXPENSIVE TEXTURED PAINT I APPLIED AFTER THE PRIMER, BUT BEFORE THE TOP GREEN COAT.. SOME HAVE DONE THE SMOOTH COAT.. I WANTED THIS PLATE TO BE ONE OF A KIND, AND DIFFRENT.....ROUGH AND RUGGED LIKE SPARTAN 117..

Well, I did something similar with my Spartan plates. I bought that Hammered Metal green paint. But I didn't paint over it, and it ended up looking TOO green. Then I tried 2-3 different colors of green and painted over the hammered metal. It did make it look like the game texture. That is NOT what that plate looks like. I'll leave it at that.

Mistakes CAN work in your favor. I sprayed a plate with the silver hammered metal on the bottom part, and with a deep blue on the top so they overlapped and faded together. Well, where the blue went over the silver while it was still wet, the silver did it's lieek texture-reaction process UNDER the blue and little dots of silver burst through. That was on the Fable plates. Probably the bext mistake I ever made. I've done that intentionally on three other Fable plates since then, and I'm going to try it with a few different colors as an experiment.

If you guys like the distressed metal and weathering look, Google some sites for painting electric trains. Those people are fanatical about realism, they worn in exhausting detail at a super small scale. There's dirt, dust, mud, rust, smoke, oil, graffiti, distressed metal, exposed metal... I even bought some decals and was going to make a plate look like a boxcar, but I haven't had time.

Model railroad painters ARE fanatical,but for the average painter,some of their stuff can be way too complicated.For a slightly easier time,try typing in Warhammer 40k.You'll find all the same types of hints,but IMO explained easier and pretty much the exact same techniques.Just another option,that's all.

i have a screw up. my very firsst faceplate. i used model car paint, and did it with abrush.
my first mistake was not painting a background first lol or at least primer haha.
2nd mistake was, well not sure what, but when i pulled up th stencil on the "finish the fight part" some of the lettering cam off, sigh. its a lot of work.

i was atually excited to see the logo came out decent for my 1st try.

i then went and got myself an airbrush, and a compressor, and some paint. ended up like this, im no spaceghost, but i was happy.

Most of those are salvageable in some fashion, I can use the doors, the buttons, use to test paint ops, etc. I have four others on the wall that I just need to toss and haven't done it.

Lawd SpaceGhost... That's impressive (the Spartan helmet I mean)... That's like... Cantaloupe Peel. :D

I'll post a few of my bigger f**k ups tomorrow.

That crackling on the surface is because the paint below is still gassing out and pushing through the paint above, making it break apart and leave a crackled surface. This hasnt happened to me on a faceplate yet but on model cars its a *****h. So ususally if your pacient (which i find very hard) this paint cracking dosnt happen.

Yeah, I specifically buy fast-cure paints for the simple fact that I know I'm not patient enough to put all the tiny thin layers I should have into the plate.
