PSA: Xbox One will still require connection to Xbox Live on Day One

Customers must connect to Xbox Live for the Xbox One’s day one update, a Microsoft spokesperson told Polygon.

A recent article on the Xbox Support page stated that customers having difficulty connecting to Live could perform an Emergency Offline Update (EOU) using a USB flash drive and a PC with an internet connection and a USB port. That article has since been removed, though a cached version is available.

The Microsoft spokesperson told Polygon that the EOU doesn’t constitute an alternate way to apply the day one update and that the company will work with customers experiencing problems.

"The site was not an alternative way to take the Day One update and customers still need to connect to Xbox Live for the update," the spokesperson told Polygon. "Because of the complexity of this customer support process we’ve actually removed the page and we will work with customers directly to make sure they have a smooth experience."

Microsoft corporate vice president Marc Whitten estimated last month that the patch would take between 15 and 20 minutes to download. The Xbox One will require the launch-day patch to function offline and online. Sony’s PlayStation 4 also required a launch-day patch, though early adopters are able to download it on a PC and install it on the PS4 via USB.

The Xbox One will be released tomorrow, Nov. 22.
