Dust Wins Microsoft’s Dream-Build-Play
Developer Dean Dodrill awarded the $40,000 first prize for visually stunning 2D beat ‘em up Dust: An Elysian Tail during Penny Arcade Expo.
Dream-Build-Play, an annual XNA Game Studio-based competition to make 360 games, recognised Coin App’s shooter/beat ‘em up Max Blastronaut, which took second place and $20,000, Nivel21’s gravity-based match-three puzzler Rotor’scope, which took third place and $10,000, and fourth place and $5,000 went to China-based Hu Ling’s martial arts action game HurricaneX2 Evolution.
Though previous winners CarneyVale: Showtime and Weapon Of Choice from 2008’s contest and The Dishwasher and Blazing Birds from 2007’s also won contracts for publishing as full Arcade games, this year the games only get the “potential opportunity” to do so. After all, each can be self-published via 360’s Indie Games on the Xbox Live Marketplace.
“Once again, the community of indie developers has blown us away with the quality of games submitted to Dream.Build.Play this year,” XNA General Manager Boyd Multerer says. “Beyond the creative talent unleashed with XNA Game Studio, it’s great to see Xbox LIVE Indie Games coming into its own as the home for independent console games.”
