How can Sony and Microsoft lower prices when retail outlets like Best Buy have already purchased some machines at a given price? Are those retail stores expected to just eat the $100?

I let best buy figure this kinda stuff out!
retailers are usually notified when a price-drop is on the way. They then stop ordering until the drop is in effect. If our buddy Doom (he owns a gaming store I believe)was here he could tell us even more. I remember him saying a few weeks ago that he'd been notified of an upcoming pricedrop by a rep.
The weak shall perish.
