U want a 4 port 10/100 megabit hub. Any brand will do. A switch is preferable though because it's better at dealing out bandwidth. Then U need 4 straight network cables, not crossover cables. Go to your local computer store because they can make you up some at your specified length for alot cheaper than buying a premade and packaged cord.

5 port hub will do, as long as there is many ports as you need. You can have spare ports on the hub unused. Get one that is autosensing for 10/100 MHz network cards (It is broadcast at a frequency, so 100 MHz is about 10-11 MBps) Agreed with the switch, it is slightly smarter than a hub, and it isn't too much more expensive to get one. It depends on what you will need the hub/switch for later after the party. If you have broadband, then it may pay to get one that will allow all of you to get online through a cable modem. That will mean that you will need a port for your cable modem, one to your PC and then however many needed to connect each XBOX into it.

You need some "normal" network cables, just explain to the people you get them off what you intend to do, so they don't sell you the wrong thing. An XBOX system link cable is a crossover network cable, so an uninformed sales person might try and give you this.
If you go into a PC store and say you are hosting a LAN party, and need a switch and some cables, they'll give you what you need.
Once I get broadband, I am going to get a switch, and connect my XBOX so that I can use xbconnect to get my XBOX online through it.

    thanx fellas,

i dont need it for more than a lan party.

and a switch is cheaper than a hub

i can get a brand new 5 port 10/100 swith for $79 AUD

    79 Australian Dollar(s) = 44.772 US Dollar(s)

    ok?

Yes, $44 is a good deal considering the ones I've seen in the past sold for around $80 for a 5 port. Especially good considering it's a switch.

Grab this cables, not the BNC ones, these are older style cables that have round metallic ends on it. Other than the fact that it is 20 metres long, which seems to me quite excessive..

The switch sounds fine to me, 5 ports is usually enough...
