I'm gonna get my Xbox at 10AM tomorrow and hook it right up to my receiver with the HD AV pack. My question is: Do I have to go into the dashboard first and let it know that I'm going to be using DD 5.1?

I don't think so. Do you have a receiver? I think that's all that needs to be set for 5.1 That's how I do it with mine anyway. Receiver not Xbox.

read your AV pack manual. Yes, I believe you set DD5.1 in the dashboard somewhere. I remember reading that in my AV pack manual.

I don't have my AV pack yet but even without it you have to specify mono, stereo, or surround. I imagine if you have an AV pack it will add another option for DD 5.1 on the XBox setup screen.
