i have neither of those ones in my xbox, mine has alot of circles in the tray.
I have a launch Xbox from Hungary and it has the Thompson.
The difference is that the newer ones are cheaper to produce. Don't get too worked up about it, there isn't anything different to write home to mom about.

"Cheaper" doesn't meen it's a bad drive, DVD drives are as common as cd-rom drives now.
