    IGN TGS 2002 Impressions below:

" One of the surprises of this year's TGS was finding out that Microsoft Game Studios was going to produce a pro wrestling game. Titled The Wild Rings, the game does not feature a specific license, which may disappoint US gamers (should it come stateside), , but may help to buoy sales in Japan.

We got a chance to take a look at the game at Microsoft's booth during the Tokyo Game Show. It's still early in development, but Rings already has a lot going for it, including a plethora of features. The game sports the following modes:

    Exhibition

    Tournament

    Title Match

    League Match

    Champions Road

    Network

    Character Edit

Matches can be one on one, tag, six person brawl, and Battle Royal. At this point, the wrestling engine is reminiscent of Acclaim's Legends of Wrestling. It's a pretty simple fighting system on the surface, where each face button handles a different kind of attack. It was difficult to determine whether there will be button combos or multiple move strings, and how complex the grappling system will be.

However, one thing that adds to its depth is the variety of different wrestling styles. While one wrestler may be more of a grappler, another is a straight-up boxer. We played with both, and each has his merits, although the boxer's move set seemed a bit limited. One thing is certain-- the matches are very balanced, and difficult to put away. Two matches went to a seventh minute, and a third could not be decided before it was time to move on.

In terms of character designs, there is the traditional high-flying wrestler wearing the trademark Mexican mask, a grappler who looks eerily like Andre the Giant, a small but grizzly boxer type, and several generic-looking dudes of various nationalities. There is also an extensive character creation feature, which serves to expand the realm of possibilities ad infinitum.

It's impossible to tell at this point whether Wild Rings will make it to American shores or not. We're leaning toward "no" at this point, due to the fact that Raw is already an exclusive Xbox wrestling title with the WWE license, to boot."

I was looking at that game yesterday on Xbox.jp, I was suprised Microsoft said nothing about bringing it to the USA. It good to know that they will. I think they should release english versions of Maximum Chase and N.U.D.E. I heard Maximum Chase was a good game and I know it would sell well in the U.S.

Thats pretty interesting. Personally, I'd much rather see a WWE game be on live, but thats another story.

Arrow Thanks for the info, G-Xis

This is good news, and I hope it's true. I want The Wild Rings for my Xbox!

The first Raw game wasn't that great, but RAW 2 is said to be the proverbial shiznit. HomeLAN.com had an interview with the THQ producer up a few days ago, probably in their archives by now. It's a good read, tho'.

I'm not normally one to play wrestling games.

However, the genericness and multitudes of different player types has me liking this game. And on Live as well?!

If it comes to the US i'm quite sure i'll be getting it.

    Talking [Harmonica Note]

    WOO-HOO-HOO!

I would like to see a career mode and a few more match types, but otherwise .

And let's not mince words: this is the true sequel to No Mercy, isn't it? Those are the exact same animations as seen in AKI's N64 games. Smart money says it's the same engine.
I just hope it's coming out this Spring, not next.

And the guy in that last screenshot is green. Somebody had to say it. It might as well have been me.
