mod chips and linux running

i ant had my x-box for long and was wondering if any of u had used modchips, they seem a good idea but i stil arnt sure. have any of you had any experience of them or no if they bugger up the system.

also i think running linux on the x-box is a good idea so does any1 no if it harms the x-box in any way and no wever it is anygd or not.
