Sega Explains Why It’s Moving to London

Sega has reorganized its business and moved all administrative work to London, cutting 73 jobs in the process. According to Sega West president and CEO Mike Hayes, the cuts were to eliminate duality within the company - that is, different employees doing the same job twice.
In an exclusive 1UP interview published today, Hayes explained that his role as president has been to organize "core administrative hubs" to handle Sega’s business outside of Japan, China and Korea. London, said Hayes, was the natural choice to lead Sega as it is "used to handling multi-territory business," and "is better set up to have a centralized operation."

"We live in a global world, and we’re a global market," explained Hayes. "This just happens to be where our administrative center is."

According to Hayes, centralizing Sega’s administration meant that many U.S. and London employees would be doing the same jobs twice, hence the cuts.

"There was a lot of duality, there was a lot of doing the same work twice," said Hayes. "And you’ll see in Europe, a similar number of people [to San Francisco] have unfortunately been made redundant, but that’s because there was a lot of copying between both San Francisco and London."
