Monkey Island 2 SE Includes Creator Commentary

Following the success of The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, LucasArts is now remaking Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. And the special edition of the sequel will include one major bonus feature the first remake did not: GameSpot reports it’ll include a commentary track featuring the three main creators responsible for the Monkey Island series, Rob Gilbert, Tim Schafer, and Dave Grossman.
GameSpot also chatted with Gilbert, Schaffer, and Grossman, who all reminisced about their time working on the game at LucasArts. "Every year that goes by, I get more nostalgic about the old games," Schafer said. "I’ve always wondered if it was nostalgia for the game or for that time when we were all working together. But after playing the special edition for Monkey 1, I can honestly say that, in my opinion, it actually holds up."

The three also spoke about what made the Monkey Island games in particular so memorable and timeless, with Gilbert and Grossman highlighting the great writing and game design, and Schafer highlighting the spitting. "The spitting contest. No other game had spitting in their game, really," he said. "Maybe I’m just biased because I wired that part up. But I thought it was the best part of the game. Now that I’m thinking about it, ’Spitting Contest’ would make a great Natal game."

Of course, all three men have gone on to other successes since then: Schafer founded Double Fine and recently completed Brutal Legend, Gilbert recently departed from Hothead Games after finishing work on DeathSpank, and Grossman went on to work on more adventure titles at Telltale Games, including the Tales of Monkey Island series.
