Morrowind Interview
The fourth installment of RPGVaults interview with the makers of Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is up and heres a little peek at whats in store.Jonric: Its known that Morrowind will include 21 classes that come with preset packages of major and minor skills. Overall, what were the major considerations in deciding how many to have and in choosing their individual skill packages?
Ken Rolston: Major considerations were: playability, balance, flavor, and role-playing portfolio.
Playability and balance were addressed through increasing differentiation between play styles - fighter, mage, thief - better balancing of comparative utility of skills - the design goal was to have no skill that wasnt suitable as your main skill - and the game settings feature in the editor, which allows us to make global changes to a wide array of gameplay constants during testing and tweaking.
Flavor and role-playing portfolios are more complex values. We maintained continuity with class concepts in previous products, but tweaked some classes and added others to suit the Morrowind environment.
