id John Carmack Wants to Make XBLA Kinect Game
John Carmack, id Software co-founder and legendary designer behind such first-person shooters as Doom, Quake, and the upcoming Rage, wants to make a Kinect game -- just don’t expect something on the scale of Doom, Quake, or Rage.
"I have an itch to make a Kinect title for Xbox Live," Carmack revealed in an interview with Joystiq, although he also admitted "I don’t even know what I’d want to do yet." But why Xbox Live and not a full-scale Xbox 360 game?
"I can’t use Kinect for our real games; there just isn’t a place for our current FPSes on there," Carmack explained, in what will surely not help Microsoft’s campaign to convince hardcore gamers the Kinect can appeal to them as well. "But it’s an interesting technology, and an Xbox Live game would be the perfect platform to do something like that on, at about the same scale of [a game for] an iOS device."
And what game is Carmack currently working on for iOS? Well, a version of their upcoming FPS Rage, the kind of game he says wouldn’t work with Kinect. As Pheonix Wright might say, "OBJECTION!"...but we’ll let Carmack actually figure out what he’d want to make for Kinect first before we start holding him to any apparent contradictions.
