Microsoft Reaches Settlement
Software giant Microsoft Corp. said on Friday it had signed a consent decree with the U.S. government to settle a three-year antitrust case that would impose restrictions on the company for five years."The settlement is fair and reasonable and, most important, is in the best interests of consumers and the economy," Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said in a statement.
"While this settlement imposes some very tough rules and restrictions on our business, we believe that resolving this case now is the right thing to do for our customers, for the entire technology industry, and for the economy," Gates said.
The U.S. Justice Department said earlier it had reached a settlement with Microsoft that called for the software giant to give computer makers more flexibility and share the inner workings of its Windows operating system with other software firms.
