Surround Lighting!
While not XBOX related (well.. is it?) this piece of news regarding a new technology in development could alter the way we play games to the point of full immersion.Color Kinetics, the pioneer of full spectrum digital lighting, announces today that it has been awarded U.S. Patent #6,166,496 for a method of augmenting a full variety of digital content-including video games, music, movies and even information-with the companys breakthrough digital lighting technology. Imagine...
These are the possibilities of the new Surround Lighting technology thats set to take the world by storm. More information can be found at the Color Kinetics website. Heres a bit more from the press release to wet your appetite. You are playing a video game and as your character enters a red room, the physical room around you also turns red. When your character is suddenly submerged in a watery environment, the room becomes a turbulent blue, with flashes of white light appearing in your peripheral vision as an underwater vehicle approaches from the side You are watching a movie that, in addition to a traditional soundtrack, contains a "light track" that enhances the mood of the movie and provides an amazing accompaniment to the action. From fiery explosions to velvety sunsets, you will be drawn into the experience as vividly as the characters onscreen. At your next party, you and your guests are surrounded by lighting that actually changes to match the music youve chosen for the festivities. But this is not your fathers old-fashioned "color organ". Color Kinetics technology has the unique ability to produce distinct lighting shows containing an infinite variety of colors and effects-as subtle or as dynamic as you wish-that truly reflect the feeling of whatever music you are listening to, be it Beethoven or the Beastie Boys.
In this way, according to Color Kinetics President and CEO George Mueller, Surround Light will do more than change the way entertainment is experienced; it will also influence the way entertainment content is created. "Our technology enables content creators-including video game developers, motion picture directors, recording artists, and Web developers- to add a whole new dimension to entertainment, enhancing the impact of their creations with a new medium: light. The result transforms the entertainment experience for consumers," notes Mueller. "The patent weve received for this technology is the first of many filings for Color Kinetics in this field, enabling us to bring these capabilities to market in a number of configurations designed both for content developers and consumers."
