ChartSpot: July 04
While superheroes sat atop both the console and PC charts in June, July saw Spider-Man 2 tackled by two football games. EA Sports' NCAA Football 2005 for the PlayStation 2 was the best-selling game of the month, edging out the PS2 version of ESPN NFL 2K5 from Sega and Take-Two despite the latter game's discount price. However, the Xbox version of ESPN NFL 2K5 came in at fourth place, versus a fifth-place finish for the first Xbox Live-enabled NCAA. Though it was pushed out of the top slot, Spider-Man 2 for the PS2 didn't fall far, slipping to the number three position. The same couldn't be said for Driver 3: The PlayStation 2 version of Atari's critically bashed game fell five slots to number nine, while the Xbox edition of the game disappeared entirely from the charts. Full Spectrum Warrior saw an even more dramatic decline, falling off the top 20 from a second-place finish in June. Though Doom 3 will certainly dominate the PC charts in August, July saw City of Heroes on top--again. NCsoft's superhero MMORPG has been the best-selling PC game since May and will likely receive another boost when its expansion City of Villains arrives next year. The list also saw many other returnees: Rise of Nations, Battlefield Vietnam, Far Cry, and Halo all remained in the top 10, joined by three resurgent Sims titles, Age of Mythology, and Flight Simulator 2004. The sole new entry in the top 20 games was Hoyle Casino 2004 at number 20. Besides NCAA Football 2005 and ESPN NFL 2K5, the console charts saw little in the way of debut titles. Dragonball Z: Budokai 2 was the only other new game in the PlayStation 2 top 10, while the Xbox list just saw the addition of Sudeki and MechAssault (yes, that MechAssault).
