Bioware Using The Unreal Engine 3
BioWare announced today that it is licensing Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 for an upcoming (and as-yet-unannounced) BioWare title. Unfortunately, at this time BioWare is announcing no other details on the new game, except that it represents a third new intellectual property from the company, along with the previously-announced Jade Empire and Dragon Age. Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 is the latest major iteration of one of gaming’s most widely-used engines. Early screens demonstrating the engine’s power have left us wide-eyed and slack-jawed, to say the least. The notion of one of the best RPG designers (think Baldur’s Gate and Knights of the Old Republic) building on Unreal Engine 3 is enough to prompt some serious drool. "We’re very happy to license Epic’s advanced Unreal Engine 3 technology," said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Joint CEO of BioWare Corp. "One of our development teams will now focus on using Unreal Engine 3 to help us create a great gaming experience in a timely manner. The Unreal Engine has powered some of our favorite games, and we’re looking forward to upholding the great history of this engine with an awesome game from BioWare."
