Bioware Using The Unreal Engine 3

BioWare announced today that it is licensing Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 for an upcoming (and as-yet-unannounced) BioWare title. Unfortunately, at this time BioWare is announcing no other details on the new game, except that it represents a third new intellectual property from the company, along with the previously-announced Jade Empire and Dragon Age. Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 is the latest major iteration of one of gaming’s most widely-used engines. Early screens demonstrating the engine’s power have left us wide-eyed and slack-jawed, to say the least. The notion of one of the best RPG designers (think Baldur’s Gate and Knights of the Old Republic) building on Unreal Engine 3 is enough to prompt some serious drool. "We’re very happy to license Epic’s advanced Unreal Engine 3 technology," said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Joint CEO of BioWare Corp. "One of our development teams will now focus on using Unreal Engine 3 to help us create a great gaming experience in a timely manner. The Unreal Engine has powered some of our favorite games, and we’re looking forward to upholding the great history of this engine with an awesome game from BioWare." BioWare also clarified that it will continue to develop its own engine technology for future titles.
