Game Developers Conference

One of the highlights of each Game Developers Conference is the announcement of the Game Developer’s Choice Awards, some of the most respected accolades in the industry. As the awards are chosen by professional game developers, even we discriminating editors at IGN tip our caps to the tastes of the devs themselves. This year, with no large surprise, Valve’s Half-Life 2 takes home the crowning title of Best Game, with Best Character Design thrown in for good measure. Halo 2 steps up from the console world to grab the Audio award, and beloved underdog Katamari Damacy gets both Game Design and Innovation awards. Eugene P. Jarvis, the man behind arcade classics like Smash TV and N.A.R.C., is this year’s Lifetime Achiever. Here’s the full list: Best Game Half-Life 2 Audio Halo 2 Character Design Half-Life 2 Game Design Katamari Damacy Technology Half-Life 2 Visual Arts World of Warcraft Writing Half-Life 2 New Studio Crytek Innovation Donkey Konga I Love Bees (the website) Katamari Damacy Lifetime Achievement Eugene Jarvis First Penguin Richard Allan Bartle, Ph.D -- founding father of Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs) Maverick Matt Adams, Ju Row Farr, and Nick Tandavanitj -- founders and leaders of Blast Theory, a renowned interactive media artists’ group Community Contribution Sheri Graner Ray -- advocate of women’s interests in game development
