About System Linking

I want to link up 2 Xbox's to play Halo 4v4. I have an Ethernet Wire (rJ45/Cat5).


1. How many disks do I need?

2. Will the wire I have work?

3. Will there be any lag/longer loading times?

I am not using XBConnect or anything to connect to the internet, or even to my computer.

Thank you all I want to have a small Halo party, and I want to do it right the first time.

No you need a system link(crossover cable) to play. You need 2 Halo disks, one in each Xbox. There won't be any lag. Have fun

Cross over cable?..... The System Link accessorie from M$ is just a cat5 wire..... so basically shouldn't an ethernet wire work too?

No a crossover cable and cat-5 cable are 2 different things. The MS system link cable is a crossover cable, not a cat-5. Crossover cables are more expensive too.

yeah, my system link cable was 15 bucks...for a friggen 25 or so foot long chord...but my friend bought one also...but we're f*cking using mine, Im getting my money and his out of it...

And exactly how can i tell if I have a cat 5, Rj45, Ethernet, or cross over type wire.

just use a hub if you don't want to go out and buy a crossover cable.

well, if i get a hub i will have to not only pay extra for the hub, but buy another ethernet cord. This whole linking thing is a total rip.

A hub is useless for only 2 boxes, but you need one for having 3 or more boxes. They are pretty cheap though.

A crossover cable will usually have "crossover" printed on the sleeve. It will certainly have it on the package. They aren't that expensive. You should be able to get one for under $10. You can get hubs for 10$-$15, too, if you'd rather go that route.

Why buy a HUB and 2 ethernet cables when you can just buy a system link???

You don't need to buy Microsoft's cable, because you're basically paying for the name....All you need is a standard crossover (the real name is interface cable) and that's all.....If you want to do a lan then you need a hub, and no, they aren't 10 to 15, they're 40 to 50 bucks....

Hmmm...well, when I originally replied to this message TWO MONTHS AGO I could find hubs on PriceWatch for $10-$15. However, I just saw a 16-port hub on Ebay for $10 shipped using the "Buy It Now" option. This would be perfect for LAN parties. No, it doesn't support 100Mbps, but who cares? 10Mbps is plenty for system link use and six times faster than my max cablemodem speed.
